Before we move on, I wanted to take a moment to acknowledge the tragic fire at Perches House on Windsor Place last month, in which Rose Roberts sadly lost her life.

As this is the first newsletter since the incident, I felt it was important to mention it.

Rose was a much-loved figure in Shrewsbury's arts community and had dedicated decades to preserving the historic 16th Century building.

Her daughter Jessica has launched a fundraiser to help restore Perches House, which has already raised over £25,000. If you'd like to contribute towards preserving this important piece of Shrewsbury's heritage in Rose's memory, you can find the fundraiser here.

Our thoughts are with Rose's family, friends, and all who knew her.

As part of Shrewsbury’s DarwIN Festival, CSONS presents a tasting menu inspired by Charles Darwin’s voyage to the Galápagos.

Crystal's Shine On Bakery has opened at 17 Hills Lane, founded by Crystal Owen in memory of her son Harvey, who died in a tragic crash in Snowdonia in November 2023.

Proceeds from the shop will support a charity providing young people with access to art and cookery programmes. The welcoming new bakery is now open and serving the community. Pop by to try the treats and support a wonderful cause.

The Parade has welcomed a colourful new independent retailer. Lil and the Pickle, founded by Helen, specialises in vibrant textile jackets featuring hand-embroidered suzani patterns, festival-ready kidswear and feel-good treasures.

Each piece showcases bold colours and intricate details, created in partnership with an artisan community. Named after Helen's daughter Lil, the brand is a family affair run with her sister. Pop in Thursday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm, to explore the uplifting collection.

Cooper Green Pooks took to the streets to ask residents what makes Shrewsbury special. The answers? It's the people. After 140 years serving the town, the firm says the community spirit is what truly stands out.

Shrewsbury Market Hall has been crowned Best Community Market 2026 at the Great British Market Awards in Birmingham. Judges praised the market's evolution, full occupancy, and role as a business incubator at the heart of the town centre.

The award adds to an impressive collection, including Britain's Favourite Market titles in 2018, 2023, 2024 and 2025. Managers Amy Williams and Ian Thorpe thanked the traders and loyal customers who make the market a success.

Loopfest 2026, taking place over the May Bank Holiday weekend (1 to 3 May), has revealed its official charity partners following a community vote. Lingen Davies Cancer Support and Shrewsbury Food Hub will benefit alongside returning partner Arty Party.

Volunteers will choose which charity their shifts support, with fundraising divided based on the number of shifts allocated to each organisation.

Festival director Jamie Smith praised the strong community response and the participatory approach to giving back.
