A new service launching across Shropshire is giving sight loss equipment a second life while helping local people maintain their independence.

Sight Loss Shropshire has introduced its Sight Loss Equipment Rehoming Service, designed to collect and redistribute unwanted or unused vision aids to people living with sight loss in the county.

Turning Unused Items into Life-Changing Support

The service focuses on everyday items that can make a real difference to someone's daily routine. Magnifiers, talking clocks, electronic readers and other low vision aids are among the equipment being collected and passed on to those who need them.

For many people, sight loss arrives unexpectedly. Accessing the right equipment quickly can be challenging, and this new initiative aims to bridge that gap by matching donated items with local people who can benefit most.

A Practical and Sustainable Solution

The scheme also tackles an environmental issue. When circumstances change, perfectly usable sight loss aids often end up discarded, despite having plenty of life left in them.

"This service isn't just about practical support for people living with sight loss - it's also about reducing waste and making responsible use of equipment that still has real value. Too often, perfectly usable sight loss aids end up in landfill when someone's circumstances change. By rehoming these items locally, we're supporting people to live more independently while also doing something positive for the environment and our wider community."

Swan Staar-Slogrove, Charity Manager at Sight Loss Shropshire

All donated equipment is carefully checked and tested before being offered to people in the local area, ensuring items are safe and fit for purpose.

How to Get Involved

Anyone with working sight loss equipment they no longer need can donate by contacting Sight Loss Shropshire. Items will be assessed and passed on to someone locally who can use them.

People living with sight loss, or those supporting someone who is, are encouraged to get in touch to see what equipment is currently available. A full list of items can be viewed online, and the team can help identify suitable options based on individual needs.

Support with collection or delivery can also be arranged where required.

Financial donations are also welcome to help sustain the service and support the charity's wider work across Shropshire.
